Fleece to finished in less than 50 miles – The Coverdale Throw from Tom Lane by Bonnie Baker
Tom Lane is a brand built from scratch by farmer’s daughter Jayne Ireland, run from her family’s arable farm in Lincolnshire, and is most well known for their luxurious wool throws, which have become a staple in town and country homes alike, including my own cottage.
As a fellow farmer’s daughter, Jayne and I share similar values to back British farming, so I’m delighted to be showcasing her best of British product: the Coverdale throw made from 100% British wool.
When I first learnt that the Coverdale throw went from fleece to finished yarn in less than 50 miles and was made entirely from British wool, I was immediately intrigued and needed to know more. As you know, I adore anything which supports our farmers and British businesses simultaneously, so this collaboration with Tom Lane couldn’t be more suited to my passions.
The wool fibre is sourced from two different sheep breeds, the Blue Faced Leicester and the Fine Marsham, on farms within 50 miles of the mill in the Yorkshire Dales – isn’t that just incredible! I’ve not seen anything else on the market quite like it, which makes the Coverdale throw superbly unique and a true piece of British craftsmanship.
Both breeds of sheep have long been known for their high-quality wool, offering naturally lustrous textures, which comes through in the finished yarns. I’ve always been very particular about the texture of blankets and throws, often struggling to find wool throws I can comfortably snuggle under, but I’m pleased to say the Coverdale passes the softness test, with none of that itchy feeling wool can sometimes be associated with.
While I was counting down the delivery days to my Coverdale throw arriving, I was deliberating whether to style it in the lounge alongside my other Tom Lane wool throw (the olive herringbone – a previous purchase from 2020) or as a bed spread, inspired by a photo I’d seen featured on the Tom Lane Instagram.
When I saw the sage colourway in person, I knew it would make the perfect tonal contrast to the chalky pink walls of the master bedroom in my cottage. The earthy green tones of the throw subtly compliment the pink hues of Farrow & Ball’s Setting Plaster on the walls and set against the wooden beams, make for an idyllic interior scheme reminding me of natural and wild foliage tones in Springtime.
I adore that the naturally textured fibres in the wool particularly suit my cottage, where the grain in the wooden beams and the slightly wonky ceilings are all in perfectly imperfect harmony.
The Coverdale throw is a testament to Jayne’s passion to support British and makes for a luxurious home accessory styled as a bedspread, in your lounge, or even draped over your shoulders outside in the cooler summer evenings.
